Will Tribe Fall to NBC?
![]() OK, I've got to come clean. NBC's rumoured buyout of Tribe has got me steamed. It's not because I envy the Tribe's founders their success. And it's not because I think big media companies should stay away from Web 2.0 companies (although I do wish they would let the market evolve without so much meddling). No, what really pisses me off is that almost two years ago our company went to the local investment community with a product that was part Tribe and part YouTube and we couldn't close a seed round. Instead we've had to bootstrap on other projects and our window of opportunity is now, seemingly, passing us by. We used to think it was us. But now, more and more, I realize that there is a huge difference between California and Toronto in terms of the market's risk-taking capability. It is sobering to wake up one morning and say to yourself that, hell, our team was every bit as good as theirs and our product was comparable. Why aren't we getting the investor traction we need? The truth is that there is nothing new in this. It's Darwinian. Organisms that live closer to rich food sources tend to do better than those that don't. So, no matter how clever and capable Toronto inventors are, we'll never have the access to deal flows that Silicon Valley based companies have. That seems obvious when written down but media collapses the distance between ideas but expands the gulf of day-to-day traction building. My question is: Is it time to move?
